I have a toothache!

Toothaches

Toothaches can be an incredibly scary experience. The pain can range considerably and is a late sign that something is wrong. For this reason you want early check ups to discover dental diseases before it is too late. Several causes produce this pain, some being tooth decay, tooth fracture, abscessed tooth, a damaged or loose filling, infected gums, or various repetitive motions such as chewing gum or grinding teeth.

There are also several symptoms that accompany a toothache. The pain can also be experienced differently, depending on the circumstance. It can be sharp or a throbbing sensation, or it can be felt when there's pressure applied on the tooth. Some other symptoms may also include redness and swelling around the tooth, fever, and headaches, pus or other foul-tasting drainages.

What Should you Do?

If you are experiencing such symptoms as presented above, or the pain is too severe, or it lasts more than a day, consult your dentist immediately. Early identification and proper treatment of infections will prevent it from spreading to other teeth, other parts of the face and even your skull or bloodstream.

When you go to the dentist, he or she will look over your medical records and conduct a proper examination. In most cases, the problem is a cavity as a result of tooth decay, in which case a simple filling will be enough. If not, an X-ray or other tests may be required to determine the cause accurately.
